چکیده

Spatializations are computer visualizations in which nonspatial information is depicted spatially. Spatializations of large databases commonly use distance as a metaphor to depict semantic (nonspatial) similarities among data items. By analogy to the “first law of geography”, which states that closer things tend to be more similar, we propose a “first law of cognitive geography,” which states that people believe closer things are more similar. In this paper, we present two experiments that investigate the validity of the first law of cognitive geography as applied to the interpretation of “point-display spatializations.” Point displays depict documents (or other information-bearing entities) as 2or 3-dimensional collections of points. Our results largely support the first law of cognitive geography and enrich it by identifying different types of distance that may be metaphorically related to similarity. We also identify characteristics of point displays other than distance relationships that influence similarity judgments.

The Distance–Similarity Metaphor in Network- Display Spatializations

Dimensionality reduction algorithms are applied in the field of information visualization to generate low-dimensional, visuo-spatial displays of complex, multivariate databases—spatializations. Most popular dimensionality reduction algorithms project relatedness in data content among entities in an information space (e.g., semantic similarity) onto some form of distance among the entities, such...

Teaching Geoscience with Visualizations: Using Images, Animations, and Models Effectively

I am a geographer and psychologist, with research interests in many aspects of spatial and geographic perception, cognition, and behavior. My particular interest is in space and place at scales larger than the human body, including both built and natural while my major interest is in the psychology of (near) earth surface space, I am interested in the space of pictures and objects because they ...

A philosophical Approach to the Allocation or Aggregation of Geography

Introduction Geography first started with simple writing. But today, this science has gained a lot of potentials and with its technical tools which has at hand, has new specialized trends and is training new experts and specialists. Hence, in the present age, especially in Iran, geography is referred to as (interdisciplinary science), because it both studies natural sciences and human sciences...

Running head: Spatial Patterns Interpreting Spatial Patterns - An Inquiry into Formal and Cognitive Aspects of Tobler's First Law of Geography

The characterization, identification, and understanding of spatial patterns are central concerns of geography. Deeply rooted in the notion that geographic location matters, one testable assumption is that near things are more related than distant things—a concept often referred to as Tobler’s first law of geography. One means of quantifying this assumption is using measures of spatial autocorre...
